Leland Wine & Food Festival

Wine + Cheese go together better than PB & J & that's just one reason why we're so excited to have Leelanau Cheese joining us for the 32nd Annual Leland Wine and Food Festival!

A little on the history of Leelanau Cheese:

Leelanau Cheese Company was first inspired in Switzerland. Every spring, high in the Swiss Alps, the traditional “Alping of Swiss Cows” has been taking place for centuries. Farmers from mountain-side villages lead the herd to alpine farm cooperatives where the cows graze the vast mountain pastures. Here rounds of fresh cheese are made with each milking. Anne and John are proud to be a part of this tradition.

John studied cheese making at the Chateauneuf School of Agriculture in Valais region of southern Switzerland. After a four month apprenticeship at Mondreleche, he carried on as cheesemaker at Eison, where he met his future wife, Anne. Anne was born in the north of France and moved to the Roquefort region to work in agriculture. She worked extensively with goats and goat cheese and then moved to Switzerland where she worked as a shephard in the Grand St. Bernard area. Together, they worked as cheesemakers for several other co-ops, including Thyon and Veysonnaz. Four years of training and hands-on experience finally led them back to Michigan. They established Leelanau Cheese in 1995 and are pleased to bring you their line of specialty Swiss and French style homemade cheeses. The setting has changed, but the recipes are the same.

This Leland Wine and Food Festival we are happy to have Green Bird Cellars & Organic Farms joining us for the day.

A little about what makes Green Bird Cellars so unique:

"We follow a holistic approach to carrying for and managing the land. Rather than using conventional methods, such as strictly foliar feeding and using synthetic chemicals, we opt to amend the soils with nutrient rich compost and fish fertilizer. Our foliar feeding and pest management is done using natural methods such as neem oil, seaweed, probiotic culture, fermented herbal teas, and kaolin clay. We believe by following these practices we have a more symbiotic relationship between us, the earth, and the fruit it provides. We are Michigan's only certified organic vineyard, orchard, and winery. Green Bird Cellars and Organic Farms is annually inspected and certified by Indiana Certified Organic (ICO) LLC, which is licensed by the USDA."

foliar feeding is a fancy way to say you spray fertilizer on the plant itself instead on just feeding the roots. but of course a lot of that spray ends up on the ground, which feeds the roots.
