Traverse City, Michigan – Travel and Lodging

White Pine Stampede – February 3, 2018

The White Pine Stampede – the Midwest’s premier nordic event – February 3, 2018.

Established in 1977 the event has been held on the first Saturday of February every year since, with the exception of snow challenged 2012. Originally a 50 kilometer, point to point, race from Frederic to Mancelona, Michigan the race is now contested 50 kilometers or 20 kilometers from Mancelona to Shanty Creek Resorts in Bellaire. There is also a 10 kilometer timed but non competitive event available for those who wish to take a more leisurely trip.

For the past 27 years five dollars from each entry, together with other voluntary gifts, has been donated to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation. To date, more than $85,700.00 has gone to the Ophthalmology Department of the hospital.

Each entrant will receive a specially designed and dated tee shirt, when they register, as part of their entry fee.

Finishers of their chosen event will receive a medal commemorating their accomplishment as they cross the finish line.

WPS Finish

The competitors in the 50 kilometer and 20 kilometer races are divided into classifications based on the style of skiing, (classic or freestyle), gender and age. Awards will be given to the TOP THREE FINISHERS in each class.

All three events start at the Mancelona High School. Prior to the race, utilize the common area, of the school, for preparing, waxing and maybe having a pancake or two before tackling the trail. Your warm ups will be transported and made available to you at your finish. Transportation will be available to return you to your car in the school parking lot.

At the conclusion of your event, and after having located your car, feel free to join us at the Shanty Creek Summit Center for the SHORT’S BREWING POST RACE COOL DOWN. A sampling of Short’s product, together with snacks, will be available for all as they discuss the day with friends and family while viewing a slide show of the day’s events. Doors will open at 1:30 PM. The SHORTS BREWING AWARDS CEREMONY will begin promptly at 3:30 PM, in the same room. Winner or not join us for a continuation of the festivities.

We are sanctioned as a non-scored race by the United States Ski Association. We look forward to working closely with the association as we plan for the future.

We have been long affiliated with the Michigan Cup Series. It has been fun over the many decades to watch us grow together.

We look forward to seeing old friends again and making new friends. The race committee and the communities of Mancelona and Bellaire welcome you to join us on the first Saturday of February. Become a part of our tradition.

Cheers!

Skunk Bear
Happy International Beer Day! People have brewed beer with yeast found in a Patagonian forest, in the hold of a sunken ship, even in a man's beard. When we heard about a beer brewed with yeast taken off the bones of an ancient whale, we were inspired to create this toast to evolution, life, and a refreshing cold one.

wish I had an answer . . . I'd bring my 7 year old daughter!

That's a 1962 American Beverage zip top can.

Identify? It's a beer... Do I win?

OMG we used to drink Olympia beer in our 20's! ( the 80's) We even had t-shirts with a horse shoe and water fall. They even sold Olympia balls , they were like kegs. but round. very portable with tappers. I think we still have a tapper.lol

Yup that's mine, beer can about yay big, empty, says Olympia on it, a little rusty. Lost it in the woods about thirty years ago. Thanks for finding it.

Ahhh yes...memories of cheap beer and high school. It was what you drank after a 6 pack of the good stuff or when you were broke. 😳

I went to Olympia for Christmas one year and got to see the old brewing building. Loved olympia

How did it end up in Michigan?

It looks to me like you've got a Little Oly my friend
