Food For Thought – Green Cuisine – July 16, 2014

Green Cuisine is Michigan’s first zero waste event and an expression of our mission to “raise awareness around just and sustainable food systems” and our best effort to promote the best in local food and sustainable business practices. Visitors will be able to meet and sample the works of local food and beverage artisans, tour Food For Thought’s organic farm and green buildings as well as socialize, learn and have fun in a beautiful setting. We also have a “green lifestyles” tent where you can learn about other green local products and services.

In line with that philosophy, this is a “zero-waste” event. As in all things sustainable, “zero-waste” is a process, not a destination. The goal is for all the waste generated from the event to be either reusable, recyclable or compostable. In year’s past we’ve had up to 1000 visitors and generated less than 7 ounces of waste! We accomplish this, in part, by composting 100% of our food and paper waste here on the farm. By attending you can observe all our other green tricks we perfected over the years.

It’s free! This is important to us because Green Cuisine is about promoting our partners in the local food and lifestyle businesses. All our artisans volunteer their time and a lot of their product to make this happen. So in exchange we do require your contact information in order that we can share that with the “vendors and sponsors only.” In addition we have some generous underwriters that help us cover part of the cost. Food For Thought picks up the balance. Please consider helping us out with a donation if you are able to do so. You will be given a name badge at the event identifying you as a sponsor so that we can thank you personally.
Please, No Pets!!

The Homestead – Music on the Mountain – Kyle Jennings – July 17, 2014

American singer/songwriter Kyle Jennings arrived on the music scene in 2004 when his album “Shine” was released with Dark Horse Records in Nashville. Out of the box, Jennings’ music made an aggressive first impression likely due to cross-genre rock influences of his early youth, such as Journey, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. A gritty mix of Americana, Rock, Country, and Blues marble Jennings’ musical style.

Tickets: $15 in advance; $20 at the event. Special ticket packages also available: $39 for your choice of 3 or $55 for all 5 Music on the Mountain concerts.

Call 231.334.5100 to reserve.

Transportation to the top of Bay Mountain begins at 6 p.m.

In the event of inclement weather, concerts will be held inside Mountain Flowers Lodge.

Good friends, a great view, and some incredible live music await you during The Homestead’s 2014 Music on the Mountain Summer Concert Series.

Ride Around Torch Tour – Elk Rapids – July 20, 2014

The Ride Around Torch is an annual one-day 26, 63, or 100 mile bicycle tour primarily along the scenic shores of Torch Lake, Michigan’s longest and one of its most beautiful inland lakes with unusually clear, bright turquoise hued waters. Several villages and hamlets lie along the lake’s shore including Alden, Eastport, Clam River and Torch River. You will enjoy a recreational, social tour that is neither a race nor a test of strength although the very hilly 100 mile route can be a challenge.

The 26 mile ride is an out and back around the north end of Elk Lake through Torch River to the food stop at Crystal Beach Park. Same hills and flats of the other routes only less.

Our signature 63 mile ride circles Torch Lake passing through Eastport, Clam River, Alden and Torch River with hills, flats, scenic views and multiple food stops.

The 100 mile ride is a challenging century with the rolling shoreline of Torch Lake, extreme hills and then some. Racing clusters are not recommended.
