Crystal Mountain – Buck Quad Celebration – December 20, 2013

Buck Chairlift Dedication Ceremony & Celebration opens the Holidays at Crystal Mountain.

Countless hours of work since last spring and an abundance of snow over the last month will culminate in a celebration on Friday, December 20 (3-7pm) as Crystal Mountain officially dedicates the new Buck Quad Chairlift.

The ceremony will begin at the base of Buck at 3pm kicking off one of the most exciting times of the year as skiers and boarders take to the slopes for the holiday break. Lift tickets are 5 for $50 on Friday with a celebration featuring music, food and drink specials as well as prizes at Kinlochen Plaza near the new lift.

Thanks to some ingenuity from the founders, a simple tow rope transported the first skiers to the top of Buck in 1956 (photo available). Some of the very same people who were there that day will be on hand as Crystal breaks the banner (3pm) on a new Skytrac Quad, similar to the Loki Quad installed two years ago. The new Buck Quads capacity will allow skiers and snowboarders quicker access to the top where three new runs (Buckaroo, Buck Glades and Gorge Glades) await. The original Buck run has also been recontoured as part of this project.

The new chairlift as well as expansion and improvements to the slopes are only part of the $4 million investment the resort has made over the last year. Crystal has added snowmaking infrastructure and a PistenBully Winch Cat to its fleet, both of which were integral to the quickest winter start in the resorts history. Added seating in the slopeside Clipper Cafe and a remodeled Wild Tomato Restaurant also represent significant commitments that provide an enhanced experience for the thousands of guests that visit the resort each year.

Enjoy food, fun, giveaways and more! Celebration will be held at the base of Buck chair on the Kinlochen Plaza from 3-7pm.

White Pine Stampede – February 3, 2018

The White Pine Stampede – the Midwest’s premier nordic event – February 3, 2018.

Established in 1977 the event has been held on the first Saturday of February every year since, with the exception of snow challenged 2012. Originally a 50 kilometer, point to point, race from Frederic to Mancelona, Michigan the race is now contested 50 kilometers or 20 kilometers from Mancelona to Shanty Creek Resorts in Bellaire. There is also a 10 kilometer timed but non competitive event available for those who wish to take a more leisurely trip.

For the past 27 years five dollars from each entry, together with other voluntary gifts, has been donated to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation. To date, more than $85,700.00 has gone to the Ophthalmology Department of the hospital.

Each entrant will receive a specially designed and dated tee shirt, when they register, as part of their entry fee.

Finishers of their chosen event will receive a medal commemorating their accomplishment as they cross the finish line.

WPS Finish

The competitors in the 50 kilometer and 20 kilometer races are divided into classifications based on the style of skiing, (classic or freestyle), gender and age. Awards will be given to the TOP THREE FINISHERS in each class.

All three events start at the Mancelona High School. Prior to the race, utilize the common area, of the school, for preparing, waxing and maybe having a pancake or two before tackling the trail. Your warm ups will be transported and made available to you at your finish. Transportation will be available to return you to your car in the school parking lot.

At the conclusion of your event, and after having located your car, feel free to join us at the Shanty Creek Summit Center for the SHORT’S BREWING POST RACE COOL DOWN. A sampling of Short’s product, together with snacks, will be available for all as they discuss the day with friends and family while viewing a slide show of the day’s events. Doors will open at 1:30 PM. The SHORTS BREWING AWARDS CEREMONY will begin promptly at 3:30 PM, in the same room. Winner or not join us for a continuation of the festivities.

We are sanctioned as a non-scored race by the United States Ski Association. We look forward to working closely with the association as we plan for the future.

We have been long affiliated with the Michigan Cup Series. It has been fun over the many decades to watch us grow together.

We look forward to seeing old friends again and making new friends. The race committee and the communities of Mancelona and Bellaire welcome you to join us on the first Saturday of February. Become a part of our tradition.
