Authors to tell the tale of Michigan Wine History at the 4th Annual Northern Michigan Wine Summit
The 4th Annual Northern Michigan Wine Summit returns to Traverse City on Monday, April 26 at the Traverse City Opera House as the wineries of both Old Mission and Leelanau Peninsula collaborate to showcase their wines and their award-winning industry. The event will feature Lorri Hathaway and Sharon Kegerreis, authors of the award-winning “From the Vine: Exploring Michigan Wineries,” which showcases Michigan wine country destinations. Lorri and Sharon will present highlights from their 2010 summer release book: “The History of Michigan Wines: 150 Years of Winemaking along the Great Lakes.” Don’t miss the fascinating history of early wine pioneers of the 1800s, the bootlegging prohibition era, the post-Prohibition boom of the 1930s and the rebirth of the industry as we now know it!
The event is in three parts:
1-2pm “The History of Michigan Wines” presentation by Lorri Hathaway & Sharon Kegerreis
2-4:30pm: Afternoon trade show featuring wine tasting, door prizes and wine
5:30-7:30pm Early-evening public wine show with wine tasting, door prizes and silent auction and a brief revisit of the historical presentation
“This event allows us to focus on the great wines we are producing here in Northern Michigan for both those in the service industry and for everyone who lives and work in our area- we know anyone can be an ambassador for local wines” says Liz Berger from Chateau Chantal Winery on Old Mission Peninsula. “We’ll be offering tastes of our wines all day to showcase the quality wines being produced in our region.”
From 1-2pm, Lorri and Sharon will introduce you to Michigan’s never-before-documented early wine history, starting with the state’s first viable wine region in the 1800s along the shores of Lake Erie. Learn about northern Michigan’s pioneers who plant the region’s first vineyards before the onset of Prohibition when legal wine production ends and a new rollicking era begins. You’ll hear about the national headline-generating raid on barrels of red wine in the Upper Peninsula and how three of Michigan’s vintners solidify their place in history during this dynamic era. The industry explodes after Prohibition and continues through the 1960s before production drops due to a changing marketplace. Significant new grape varietals crop up in the 1960s and 1970s, including plantings by five northern Michigan vintners. After a changing law shuts down several wineries, the industry reinvents itself into vibrant culinary wine and food destinations that garner national and international attention for stylish wines influenced by our Great Lakes maritime climate. Everyone is welcome, though the presentation should be of special interest to restaurant owners and managers, store owners and managers, media, significant tourism and community leaders, wineries and other VIPs.
From 2-4:30pm a trade-show featuring local wineries will open for restaurant owners & managers & waitstaff, store owners & managers & clerks, media, hoteliers, plus tourism & community leaders. Each participating winery will have a tasting table and information about their wines. This will be a great opportunity to meet will local wineries and try many local wines all in one location. Door prizes, fun, and games will keep the atmosphere light and entertaining
From 5:30-7:30pm the public will be invited to a wine tasting for $7/person. Cheeses, breads, crackers, and fruits will accompany the featured wines. An abbreviated version of “History of Michigan Wine” will be offered at 6:30pm. A fun atmosphere will feature games, trivia, door prizes, and small silent auction to benefit the Michigan Wine Foundation. Many local restaurants will offer special discounts on Monday evening to patrons with a NoMiWi ticket.
Northern Michigan is a rapidly growing wine region, currently producing world-class wines which impact not only the local economy but which also contribute to the state’s nearly $19 billion tourism industry. The Northern Michigan vintners have become a catalyst for Michigan, drawing attention to the state’s overall image as a year-round agri-tourism destination. Northern Michigan is home to over 850 acres of vineyards which are used by the over 24 area wineries to produce more than 150,000 cases of wine each year. Group of local citizens organize Cherry-T Ball Drop New Years Eve
Downtown Traverse City will have yet another exciting event this winter. The Cherry-T Ball drop is scheduled on New Years Eve 2009. “It will be like Times Square, just bit smaller with a Northern Michigan feel,” jokes Brian Sweebe, one of the organizers of the event. “We are going to have a giant Cherry drop from the sky as the clock strikes midnight,” says Brian.
The 200 block of Front Street, downtown Traverse City will be blocked off at 6:00 pm New Years Eve. The street will be cleared and a stage and tents will be erected. A live band will take the stage at 10:30pm. “We believe this will be a great thing for the restaurant and other businesses downtown,” says Pam Marsh, owner of Red Ginger restaurant. “We normally have a real busy New Years Eve, but the patrons tend to leave downtown early,” continues Pam, “this is a great idea to keep the town exciting throughout the evening.”
The local group of citizens fortunately include Thom Darga, from DargaWorks, the company that is building the structure on the corner of Park and Front streets. “We wanted to drop a giant cherry, much like times square, and we happen to have a very large crane downtown right now,” states Thom. The crane can reach over to the middle of front street and the cherry will drop to the timing of the end of 2009.
“It will be exciting,” says Christal Willcox, promotions director from Classic Rock the Bear and Real Rock 95.5 & 105.1, the radio sponsor for the event, “the biggest hurdle was the dropping of the cherry and with the crane already here, it worked out perfectly.”
Although there is no admission for the event, Goodwill Industries will be onsite collecting can goods and personal hygiene items for the local needy. “We wanted to make sure this was totally a non-profit event and that it will help a local charity,” states Brian, “everything we are doing will be run by volunteers and paid for from donations from the community and sponsors.”
If anyone is interested in helping, donating or just want more information please contact Brian Sweebe at 231-360-8552.

TRAVERSE CITY July 9, 2010 – Traverse City Film Festival founder Michael Moore has announced the line-up for the 2010 edition of the festival, now in its 6th record-breaking year.
Moore, the Academy Award-winning director of “Bowling for Columbine” and” “Capitalism: A Love Story,” launched the Traverse City Film Festival in 2005 in an aim to bring often-undistributed national and international films to the public in this remote area of Michigan.
The festival will be held from July 27 to August 1.
“You might call this year’s fest a brazen, incendiary celebration of art, and specifically, the art of cinema,” said Moore. “Cinema that is not afraid to take risks, to challenge the conventional wisdom, to move an audience so profoundly that everyone will feel transported to a place where one can think and explore and rebel.”
Held in downtown Traverse City, Michigan on the shores of Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay, the Traverse City Film Festival is quickly becoming one of the most renowned independent film festivals in the country. It has gained a reputation for attracting the best in independent world cinema.
Along with an assortment of over 100 films, this year’s festival boasts favorites such as an expanded film school schedule, daily free panel discussions, an array of parties and other special events including a series of free films, on a huge outdoor screen set against the beautiful Traverse City waterfront, which has been expanded and will take place Tuesday through Sunday nights.
New to the festival this year, the University of Michigan is teaming up with the Traverse City Film Festival to teach filmmaking and prepare students for jobs in the film industry. In addition, U of M faculty members will serve as moderators, panelists and jurors in the first step toward a broader participation in the film festival.
“Along with realizing our goal of becoming a major international film festival, we now can draw on the educational support of the University of Michigan to lend its expertise to our educational initiatives,” said Moore. “We celebrate great filmmaking, aim to help budding filmmakers on their paths, and also want to offer opportunities for the general public to deepen its appreciation of film.”
Early tickets will go on sale to the 3,000-strong Friends of the Traverse City Film Festival this Sunday, July 11, and then to the general public on
Saturday, July 17.

Mazursky, “Julie & Julia,” Woodstock Tribute, Kids Festival among 2009 highlights
The Traverse City Film Festival is gearing up for a really big birthday party, to be celebrated by a cast of thousands. The festival will mark its fifth anniversary July 28 through August 2 on the shores of Lake Michigan.
“It’s amazing that the festival is already five years old,” said film festival founder and Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Moore. “It seems like it was just yesterday that we had the crazy idea of making Traverse City the home to a major film festival that would bring the best of independent world cinema to northern Michigan. That goal has been fully realized, and along the way we began operating one of the best year-round movie theaters in the world. The festival keeps growing in stature and quality, and that will continue in spades this year.”
Moore has announced some of this year’s highlights among 110 screenings of more than 100 films and shorts to be shown in six venues: a tribute to the life and work of director, writer and actor Paul Mazursky, who will attend; a closing night premiere screening of “Julie & Julia” starring Meryl Streep; the 40th anniversary screening of the newly restored director’s cut of “Woodstock” with Wavy Gravy of Woodstock fame attending; a new TCFF Kids Festival; and the debut of a new TCFF Film School. The full festival schedule will be released July 2.
* The festival kicks off on Tuesday, July 28, with an Opening Night Film at the City Opera House and at the State Theatre, followed by an Opening Night Party in a transformed Wade Trim parking lot at the corner of Park and State Streets. At dusk, “Men in Black” will be shown for free on a giant screen outdoors in Open Space Park on the Bay.
* Paul Mazursky and family will be on hand for this year’s festival Tribute to a filmmaking legend. Mazursky’s filmography includes “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” “Moscow on the Hudson,” “Harry and Tonto,” “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice,” “Enemies: A Love Story,” “An Unmarried Woman” and dozens of others. Mazursky will appear at screenings of three of his films and will serve on a panel as well.
* The Closing Night Movie will be the Midwestern premiere of “Julie & Julia.” Starring Meryl Streep as Julia Child, the film also features Amy Adams in writer-director Nora Ephron’s adaptation of two best-selling memoirs: Powell’s “Julie & Julia” and “My Life in France” by Julia Child with Alex Prud’homme. Based on two true stories, the film intertwines the lives of two women separated by time and space.
* The director’s cut of “Woodstock” will be featured during the festival to commemorate the 40th anniversary of one of rock’s most famous events. The film is not only newly restored, but features never-before-seen footage. In conjunction, Wavy Gravy of Woodstock announcer fame will attend and participate in the festival. A documentary about his life, “Saint Misbehavin’,” will be shown, with its director, Michelle Esrick, and producer, David Becker, also attending.
* The TCFF Kids Festival will present award-winning independent children’s films from around the world at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday at the State Theatre. Tickets will be reduced in price to $6.
“We have been paying close attention to children’s film festivals this year, looking for the best of the best,” said Moore. “The films we are bringing aren’t the big summer blockbusters that we normally hear about these are great films made for kids that most young people here would never get the chance to see.”
* The Traverse City Film Festival Film School is a another new addition this year, offering a chance for filmmaking students of all ages the opportunity to meet with a different filmmaker each day, who will present one of their films and answer questions. More details will be announced.
* Free Movies in Open Space Park on Grand Traverse Bay will once again be offered nightly at dusk. The lineup begins Tuesday, July 28, with “Men in Black,” followed by “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” on Wednesday, “Hair” on Thursday, “Goonies” on Friday and “Big” with Tom Hanks on Saturday. Sunday will be a makeup date if an earlier screening is rained out.
Food vendors on site at the family movies in Open Space will include That’sa Pizza, House of Dogs, Espresso Bay, Aw…Shucks roasted corn, Why Knot Hot Baked Pretzels, Opa! and American Spoon Foods gelato.
* The festival box office, cybercafe and store will again be located on the main floor of Radio Centre on East Front Street at Park, offering a comfortable place to sit and review the schedule, watch film festival trailers, drink complimentary coffee, and check the Internet and email at computer stations. Festival merchandise will also be sold out of this storefront beginning on July 4.
